Meet the Bunny

In my recent entry, Book Meme, I mentioned that I am reading Watership Down because my coven mascot told me too. This prompted Cat Chapin-Bishop to wonder why. For the last couple of days I've been thinking about whether I should respond and write about my coven mascot, the Bunny. On the one hand, it's a coven matter of cultic proportions. On the other hand, I think the Bunny wants people to know. Actually I think the Bunny wants to dominate the world, but more on that later. So here we are.

Like all good cult figures, the Bunny's origins are lost to me. I know that, before my time, the Bunny arrived via my coven mate one day who thought a bunny bank would be more prosperous than a piggy bank. I don't know how other covens deal with money, but this is how we do it. We feed the Bunny. As time went on, we began to notice that the Bunny had some life to it, and some attitude too. The Bunny likes to be fed and the more you feed the Bunny, the more the Bunny wants.

Miami has a large and vibrant community of people in Orisha tradition. "Feeding" is part of that tradition. It became clear to me that all the Orisha energy of the city was penetrating the Bunny and so I named her Bunisha. By the way, I consider Bunisha female, but I think my HPS thinks of the Bunny as sexless or hermaphroditic.

Bunisha's power has grown, as have her demands. She is present at most of our rituals now and is often on or near the dinner table when we feast afterwards. When we're not at ritual, she likes to be near the permanent altar at the covenstead. Spring is definitely her time of the year and she will be receiving great honors at our Ostara ritual later this month. She's got a lot of attitude (she's most likely a daughter of Oshun) and I have no doubt that she has her eyes on total world domination.

Recently, Bunisha visited me in a dream. She revealed her oracle to me, how to use it and interpret it for others. And she instructed me to read Watership Down, which is her sacred text. So now you know the rest of the story.

I love it! There is so much mystical rabbit lore that I can't even begin to cover it, but I certainly want to reread Watership Down. Maybe we should all make it an Ostara assignment and then blog on Ostara about what we found most spiritually significant about the book.

Ah, Bunisha! Now I understand. Yes, absolutely I can believe she is a daughter of Oshun...

My old coven had a cow. Similar story, but less easy to feed... And my family has Michael, a seventy or so year old carven wooden bust of a stereotypical Swiss gentleman. Perhaps someday I'll get Peter to post his portrait. He looks particularly good in seasonal garb--a green man mask is nicely Otherworldly on his face.

Let's hear it for the protectors, in all their guises. :)

And if you think I'm kidding about Bunisha wanting to take over the world, I just learned today that her Bunny Money Ritual, written by my uber-talented coven mate Leni Hester, appears in the new book "Manifesting Prosperity: A Wealth Magic Anthology."

Angela, it's like a Pagan blogger book club. Nice!

Cat, I'd love to see a photo of Michael.

Thanks for your comments.
