Questions for Pagans Pt. 4
Pagan Rituals
What is the most basic form of ritual in your Pagan tradition?
I'm grounded in Wicca. The basic ritual form is this: casting the circle, calling quarters, invoking gods, cakes and wine, thanking the gods, releasing the quarters, and releasing the circle. Somewhere in the middle there is something about the reason for the ritual, perhaps a working or celebrating a holiday. How do rituals play a part in your form of Paganism?
Ritual plays a very important part in Wicca. I love ritual and it's very important to me. Ritual is the means through which I express my spirituality and a vehicle for personal transformation. If you didn't practice rituals would you be considered non-Pagan?
This is an interesting question. Some anthropologists like to define religious groups by cultic acts rather than beliefs. It's definitely easier for Pagans to come together through practice than shared beliefs. But even if I didn't perform rituals, I would still consider myself Pagan because I hold certain beliefs that I can define for myself and that would be recognized as Pagan by others. Can rituals be a guiding influence both inside and outside of the community?
No matter how much you plan a ritual, you can never really know what all the effects will be. I've participated in rituals that haven't affected me at all, but touched others tremendously. I've participated in rituals that didn't seem to have an effect at the time, but had powerful results in the long run. I've seen non-Pagans witness or participate in rituals that touched them in some unexpected way. So yes, I do think rituals can influence those inside and outside of our community.Do rituals have a transformative effect on you as an individual and as a group, and can ritual 'break through’ to the otherworld, another realm or reality?
Rituals can have transformative effects. I can't think of one specific ritual that has had that kind of effect on me personally, but certain rituals collectively have. I have not experienced the otherworld through ritual, but I believe it might be possible. I have talked to people that say they have, but they practice a more shamanistic form of Paganism.Have you ever met anyone, or heard about, anyone become mentally ill by participating in a ritual.
Can ritual be in any other way dangerous?
I have never known of anyone become mentally ill by participating in ritual. I've met some damn crazy Pagans, but they were already nuts long before coming to the path. I think don't think ritual can be dangerous for most healthy people beyond cutting your finger with your white-handled knife or setting yourself on fire for swinging those bell sleeves over candles.
