Good Call

The staff at Hotel Coral Beach, a five-star Cancun resort, mistook Nobel peace prizewinner Rigoberta MenchĂș for a beggar.

She was wearing a Mayan dress, the traditional attire of indigenous people in central America, and the hotel's response was also traditional: throw her out.

It's a good thing other hotel guests recognized the Unesco goodwill ambassador, Guatemalan presidential candidate and figurehead for indigenous rights. Sadly, it's not the first time MenchĂș has been thrown out of hotels.

The Guardian reports that commentators noted the irony of resorts discriminating against real Maya while trying to attract tourists with fake Mayan architecture and spectacles.

Proof yet again of the truth behind the cliche about why it's bad to assume something.
